God Bless the Elderly

Tim Eatman ©2023

God bless the elderly
Seniors we love
Stand beside them
And guide them
Til the time they will join You above
Through dementia
And through loneliness
May they always feel your love
God bless the elderly
Til You take them home

Truck Driver’s Prayer

Lyrics by Tim Eatman and Steve Bardwell ©2023

I’ve gone so far on this old road

Even if it’s a dead end

I’ve lived every mile

And steered through every bend.

I’ve been broke down in the ditch

Ain’t never gonna strike it rich

But I’m having a good time

Just keeping it between the lines.

Stay out of my lane

I’m right there by your side
I’m driving with my angels

And enjoying the ride

I’m driving with my angels

Everywhere I go

Yeah, I’m on my way to heaven

But let’s just take it slow.

Got no special destination

Just a nice Sunday drive

With God’s love as my seat belt

Keeping me alive!

I’ve always wondered why
We’ve never had a road

That didn’t have no potholes
And never would get froze.

I guess it’s a lot like life
Full of worry and full of strife
But when our angels are riding shotgun

The fun has just arrived!

Doctor Sunshine’s Letter to the Editor

Old people matter. Our society provides some health care and some
shelter for seniors, but it only scratches the surface. For most people,
after 65 or 70 life gets to be more of a challenge every day. The battle
could be health, finances, or loneliness…or all three.
When the health deteriorates to more than aches and pains, most
seniors wind up in nursing homes. They are unbelievably expensive and
only a few seniors have the luxury of full-time care. But the memory
care centers and nursing homes are God’s waiting rooms. They all know
that life as they knew it is over. No home, no car, no home-cooked
meals, no church, no spontaneous trips to the store and the list goes
on.
As Doctor Sunshine, I have tried to bring a little brightness into their
day. I sing, play the guitar, play the piano, tell corny jokes, and pray
with them. I’ve ministered to them over 2,500 times in the last 25
years. For an hour, as God’s messenger, I try to mirror His love for
them. My ministry is called Holyfun Music Ministry. The mission
statement is to share God’s message of peace, love, and joy. My
website is www.holyfunmusic.com.
God asked me to write a book about my nursing home adventure. It
took me four years, but in 2022 I published NURSING HOMES A
Missionary’s Journey Through Heaven’s Waiting Room.

Of all the daily trials these children of God face, none is greater than
loneliness. They are alone almost all day and visitation is inexcusably
awful. Some of the residents have family who live a few minutes away,
but they may see them only once or twice a year.
Out of sight. Out of mind. The saddest words are the Truth. A
predominance of apathy is a whole lot of nothin’! It is time for our
society to wake up, one family at a time. Seniors need you now more
than ever before. Other cultures have figured this out, so why can’t
ours? Our country needs to unite with the words “Old People Matter!”
As a nation, we must learn how to express love.

Uncle Joe

By Tim Eatman ©2022

An old man was watering the lawn at the nursing home
When I pulled in and parked my car
And the front door gleamed its sparkling chrome
And I felt like the wiseman following the star

Uncle Joe had been living here at the memory care center
For maybe about six months now
If procrastination is a sin I’m surely a sinner
‘cause it was my first visit anyhow

I gave myself a break and forgave my sins
Because in business I am no small-fry
My job is quite important through anyone’s lens
And besides, Joe was the same kind of guy

The lady receptionist’s smile was sincere
As she greeted me at the door
But the smile went away and she said “Oh dear”
When I told her who I was there for

I stammered “I meant to be here yesterday
But my schedule just didn’t work out
But one thing’s for sure I am here today
And I hope Uncle Joe’s up and about!”

My heart knew something was terribly wrong
When she said the words “please follow me”
I stood still for a second before I tagged along
Fearing what her words would be

I’m terribly sorry to let you know
that Joe is no longer here
It’s a surprise to us and I’m sure quite a blow
But Joe’s angels have chosen to interfere

Old Joe’s found his place in heaven now
Probably singin’ with the heavenly chorus
And around here we’ll have to be making do somehow
But believe me it’s quite the task before us.

You know your Uncle Joe kind of ruled this place
And we will all certainly feel his loss
His smile is not one that’s easy to replace
But his transition will honor the cross

You must be terribly proud being related to him
All the time he was singing your praise
“Donnie did this” and “Donnie did that”
Became quite a familiar phrase

I know I speak for everyone here at the center
When I tell you we share your pain
We all know the grief you’re about to enter
But in his death you’ve a lot to gain

The maid found this note here for you
that was written by your uncle Joe
If like the others it’s only just a sentence or two
But I’m sure it’s some things you ought to know

I found a chair on the porch and sat myself down
To recover my body from shock
My earlier smile had turned into a frown
As my mind started to slowly take stock

If only I had stuck to my plans
And gotten out here yesterday
It would be different sitting with my head in my hands
Processing “I’m sorry, he passed away.”

I opened up the note that began “Hi Donnie”
I hope you’re doin’ well
If you’re readin’ this note you’re probably saying “by golly”
I hope old Joe ain’t in hell!

Ha! You know better than that
the note continued on
Jesus and I sat right where you’re at
And talked about when I’d be gone

The times spent with my angels and him
Are times I’ll always savor
As the lights on my life start to dim’
I was wondering if you’d do me a favor.

Since you never visited me I want you to know
That actually it isn’t too late
For the love and respect you’d like to show
I’m sure are probably great.

You remember Aunt Jenny, your Mom’s sister from Maine?
She’s written me a letter or two
Ever since her stroke she’s not been the same
But she always asks about you.

She’s also in a nursing home not far from here
And I imagine her days are few
A visit from you to her would be dear
And mean a lot to both her and you

As I walked to my car I passed by the old man again
Who stopped watering and walked up to me
He said “Old Joe was quite a man”
On that I am sure we’ll agree

I won’t B.S. you but I still recall
That you really kind of broke Joe’s heart
You never visited or gave him a call
And your decisions just weren’t smart

So get on with your life but don’t forget Joe
When you work or when you play
There’s one last thing Joe would want you to know
You, too, will be old some day.

Helping Older People Endure (HOPE)

By Tim Eatman ©2022

Stopped by a nursing home today
Had a nice visit with an old friend
After an hour he begged me to stay
He didn’t want our conversation to end

We both told story after story
Recalling the “good old days”
His face was radiant with glory
As he uttered the following phrase

You’ll never know in a thousand years
Just what today has meant to me
A day filled with worry and fears
Turned into one with jubilee

You know it’s not easy waiting to die
When the body just wants to give up
He paused and managed a sigh
And I sensed tears were about to erupt

Every day is pretty much the same
As I sit in this wheelchair and exist
Each yesterday is just another frame
As I recall opportunities missed

But dwelling on yesterdays is for fools
‘Cause nothing will ever bring them back
Even the treasures and the jewels
Can’t compete with emptiness and lack

But today I didn’t just sit here and mope
Your visit sure changed all that
You managed to give me a little hope
When you stopped by for this little chat

You know hope is a little small word
Whose meaning is gigantic in size
Without hope life is absurd
And we’ll all fall short of the prize

Without hope life is void of any light
Nothing much matters at all
Without hope it’s the darkness of night
Just waiting for the curtain to fall

So I’ll take this day and rejoice
And dwell on things that are pleasant
You’ve reminded me I still have a choice
To honor the gift of the “present”

I won’t worry about what comes tomorrow
I won’t sit here and dwell on the past
Your visit has robbed me of sorrow
And filled me with a hope that can last

So I left my friend with a vow
That soon I would return
I knew I was different now
With a lesson I was blessed to learn

Love is meant for expressing
Of that we can be sure
We’re the ones receiving the blessing
When we help older people endure

Look the Other Way

By Tim Eatman ©1998

Went up on the mountaintop

To see what I could see

Hopin’ there’d be something out there

Looking back at me

Saw part of a rainbow

Just the yellow and the red

Listened to the echoes

Of the thoughts within my head

They finally turned into words that said

Use your twenty-twenty vision

Don’t leave anything unseen

Check out the distant planets

And everything between

But you won’t find the truth out there

No matter what they say

But the light will be shining for you

When you look the other way!

‘Cause deep inside your heart

The answers lay

Didn’t make the honor roll

The teachers were unfair

Could’ve been a movie star

If I just had more hair

Someone should do something

About violence and crime

A ladder without rungs

Is hard to climb!

Use your twenty-twenty vision

Don’t leave anything unseen

Check out the distant planets

And everything between

But you won’t find the truth out there

No matter what they say

But the light will be shining for you

When you look the other way!

‘Cause deep inside your heart

The answers lay.

I always had a reason

When things didn’t go my way

Excuses seemed excusable

Since there’d be hell to pay

Every life experience

Is a lesson to be learned

They’re the tools that help me

Everywhere I turn

Use your twenty-twenty vision

Don’t leave anything unseen

Check out the distance planets

And everything between

But you won’t find the truth out there

No matter what they say

But the light will be shining for you

When you look the other way

‘Cause deep inside your heart…

The answers lay

When my life is over

And my race is finally run

Hope everyone who loved me says

They had some “Holyfun”

Hope everyone remembers

When we laughed and when we cried

I’m gonna be your angel

Standing right there by your side

Use your twenty-twenty vision

Don’t leave anything unseen

Check out the distance planets

And everything between

But you won’t find the truth out there

No matter what they say

But the light will be shining for you

When you look the other way

‘Cause deep inside your heart…

The Master waits.

God Knows What He’s Doin’

By Tim Eatman ©2013 (with additions in 2020 and 2021)

When the Lord told Noah to go and build a boat

He said, “Do it now before the storms begin”

Noah listened to his call

And when the rain began to fall

He said, “God knew what He was doin’ once again”

CHORUS

God knows what He is doin’

When He opens up a door

Even though there’s times when we don’t understand

When we choose to live in trust

He’ll take care of all of us

God knows what He is doin’ after all

Now little David volunteered to take a stand

It didn’t matter that Goliath was so tall

He just took aim at his fat head

And when he fell they all just said,

“Guess God knew what He was doin’ after all

CHORUS

God knows what He is doin’

When He opens up a door

Even though there’s times when we don’t understand

When we choose to live in trust

He’ll take care of all of us

God knows what He is doin’ after all

When old Moses’ army marched into the sea

They were confidently listening to God’s call

As they ran across the sand

A path of water turned to land

Guess God knew what he was doin’ after all!

CHORUS

God knows what He is doin’

When He opens up a door

Even though there’s times when we don’t understand

When we choose to live in trust

He’ll take care of all of us

God knows what He is doin’ after all

Several thousand came to hear the Master preach

They were hungry with no Pizza Hut to call

He took a little boy’s sack lunch

And he fed the whole darn bunch

Guess God knew what He was doin’ after all!

CHORUS

God knows what He is doin’

When He opens up a door

Even though there’s times when we don’t understand

When we choose to live in trust

He’ll take care of all of us

God knows what He is doin’ after all

When the corona virus scared us half to death

We were running around coughing in our sleeves

But the virus didn’t win

The churches opened up again

And God knew what he was doin’ after all!

CHORUS

God knows what He is doin’

When He opens up a door

Even though there’s times when we don’t understand

When we choose to live in trust

He’ll take care of all of us

God knows what He is doin’ after all

Reincarnation needs a metaphor

To help us understand

That anyone can die to their old life

The lowly caterpillar died

And a beautiful butterfly came alive

Guess God knows what He is doin’ after all.

God knows what He is doin’ after all.

REACH FOR THE SKY

BY TIM EATMAN ©1998

Look at me

What do you really see?

Have I shown you the beauty inside?

I was afraid

Until some games I played

Helped me see

I had nothing to hide

Now I reach for the sky just like a flower

Soaking up each precious ray of sun

And I sing like the world is one big shower

I’ve got a song of joy for everyone

I was alone

Inside these walls I’d grown

To protect me from monsters outside

Now that’s the past

I’ve taken off my mask

From now on

I’ll live my life with pride

While I reach for the sky just like a flower

soaking up each precious ray of sun

And I sing like the world is one big shower

I’ve got a song of joy

I’ve got a song of joy

I’ve got a song of joy for everyone!
